Wardrobe Germicidal Light

WARDROBE GERMICIDAL LIGHT

Year: 2013 | Georgia Tech | Skill: Story Board Drawing, SolidWorks Modeling | Role: Individual Work

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Picture
Ultraviolet Light
  • bacteria from washer, dyer and also from closed wardrobe
  • manual switch may do harm to users
  • no time control, may do harm to clothes
Visible Wardrobe Light
  • unadjustable light direction
  • inconvenient installation

DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

  • Sanitizer & Lighting This light should both provide visible light and reach the result of killing bacteria of clothes.
  • Adjustable & Convenient The light should be adjustable flexibly in order to fit for most kinds of wardrobes, reducing dead spaces of light as many as possible.
  • Electronic Timing The UV sanitizer part should have the function of time setting. It is better for the clothes.
  • Automatic Switch The UV sanitizer part should turn off when user opens the wardrobe door and turn on when user closes the door automatically, in order to avoid user being harmed by UV directly.

FINAL CONTEPT

Picture
The final concept meets all the four design requirement. It has both two functions of sterilization and lighting. It is easy to install without using screws. Modular design makes users adjust the light direction flexibly, adding or taking down the lights. The wardrobe germicidal light has six main parts: adjustable rod, visible light, UV light, timer, battery compartment and power supply with wire.
Dimensions The length range is from 20-40 inches. According to research, usually the width of closet is from 25-36 inches. Since the light parts are thin and small, the whole light will not occupy much spaces of closet.

STORY BOARD

PART 1: ADJUSTABLE ROD

Picture
When user rotates screw cover (No.1), the four pieces of metal in one end of outer rod (No.2) will clip the inner rod tightly. When user rotates the cover in the opposite direction, the rod will be free to adjust the length. There is a spring in one end of inner rod (No.3), in order to fine adjust the rod when user puts the rod in the closet.

PART 2: VISIBLE LIGHT

Picture
The round light part in the middle can be rotated to any direction. The power is conveyed through two little electrodes (No.1). Left one is positive and right one is negative. Then one end of each electrode touches the circle electrode (No.2) which is located in the outer frame part. The upper one is positive and the lower one is negative.

PART 3: UV LIGHT

Picture
The UV light part has five UV bulbs with a reflector behind the bulbs. It is strong enough to kill bacteria. It also can be adjusted flexible.

PART 4: TIMER

Picture
There are main switch (red button), three grey buttons which can control different sterilizing time of UV light and a light sensor which can detect if the wardrobe’s door is closed. I use three small clock graphs (which are LED) and different clothes’ material to make users better understand which time button they should choose.

PART 5: BATTERY COMPARTMENT

Picture
Users can choose using battery or power supply with wire depending on their actual using situation. As for the battery compartment, it only needs four batteries to provide enough electricity.

PART 6: POWER SUPPLY

Picture
The power supply with wire is another way to provide electricity as mentioned. A circuit board with a transformer is located in it.
